I was in high school; the fact that I was a longhaired hippie dope smoker was irrelevant.  My parents and their friends were responsible for Nixon.

Edit:  I'm mistaken, I was in junior high at the time.

BS? BS?

You know the first time I smelled tear gas? It was July 2nd, 1995 at Deer Creek Music Center. You see the Grateful Dead made the mistake of scheduling a Deer Creek show on a Sunday in the midst of a 4th of July holiday week, giving every deadhead from here to timbuktu plenty of time to make it to the small but use-to-be great venue. Well, as to be expected, 40,000 people showed up to the sold-out show without tickets.

So they started playing Desolation Row and I said to my friend, "oh shit, watch the fence" and sure enough, almost on cue, about 10,000 deadheads came pouring over the 6 1/2 foot tall fence at the back of the lawn. We kinda saw this coming as we parked in the lot behind the venue and had to walk past 40k people needing a "miracle" and saw the 2 dozen cops, spread out over 200  yards, between the heads and the fence. Do the math.

Well it wasn't long before over 1/2 the fence collapsed. Sections of it were being passed through the audience. The band never stopped to have a break between first and 2nd sets and went into a non-stop collage of Scarlet Begonias, Fire, drums, all too much, attics of my life, and sugar magnolia.

The venue put the house lights on and left them on for the entire concert, but never shut the band down. From the lawn, we could see down I-69 cop lights as far as we could see (over 200 cop cars). At one point a helicopter hovered right over the lawn and the band played helicopter noises on their instruments to match the sound... Talk about die-hard...

I'm guessing about 7-8k extra people got in (as the venue was standing room only BEFORE the mass rush to the fence). At some point, tear gas was used to keep the crowd at bay (hence, my smelling it for the first time).

The worst part is we had to walk past the now 150-200 REALLY PISSED OFF cops to get to our car. uggh, not fun but one hell of a show. Again, I knew it was going to go bad at about the 3rd bar played of Desolation Row (one of my fav songs and not something you hear at a lot of dead shows).

Somewhere I still have my mail-order opalescent ticket stub to show for it. I also had mail orders for the chicago shows (Jerry's last shows) the next weekend.

No, don't even try and say I'm just some pretender. I've been to about 20 dead shows (only because I didn't get to go to a show till 93 for the first time) not counting post-jerry concerts. I've seen Rat Dog about a dozen times, "The Dead" 5 times, several Further Fests, I'm a HUGE Moe fan, having seen them at least a dozen times. I've seen Phil and Friends about 8-9 times and seen Gov't Mule at least 15 times. Not to mention a ton of other lesser bands a few times each.

While I'll admit that I don't give up all my "reality" responsibilites and and head to a rainbow gathering, I'm still right there at heart.

Not all hippies are extreme-far leftists. As a matter of fact, I know quite a few hippies that actually protested a Democratic convention a few years back. Most hippies I know are a little left of right , not the other way around. Most hate both parties near equal. They love their dank and their freedoms but they also love their guns, too.

I'm spending my labor day weekend (well, Fri-Sun) at a private hippie gathering in Kentucky camped deep in the woods.

Oh, and I'll match my 4-Way with anything you've had in you life, hands down.

Edit: I forgot to mention my ride locked her keys in her brand new Toyota Camery, which we realized when we got to the car. I guess she went back into the car to get her shrooms and left the keys in there. Well, her husband made the executive decision to bust the window out, as we were thinking "how long would it take to get a locksmith out here and how much would it cost". They spent about $100 getting the window replaced. I'd say the decision was solid.

Ps-For DMT- Check your PM's....

Savior, I know it's hard to understand how anyone could listen to that "music" without immediate recourse to bloodletting, but remember, this is music by and for people who thought men wearing puffy blouses, buckskin jackets and tie-dye looked good.

I got curious and checked my iTunes...I own six songs by The Grateful Dead (out of 3500).  My favorite is "The Music Never Stopped."  I'm obviously not a big fan; but when a band's been around so long, they're almost sure to put out a few songs you'll like.

I knew a few Deadheads in college.  They mostly talked about how "tight" the band is--fans like how well they play together.  They also talked a lot about the sense of community among Deadheads and their experiences getting to/enjoying/going home from the concerts.  The camaraderie seems to be as much of a draw as the band itself.

Husband™ summed it up for me once when he said that Dead music puts him in mind of old-timey cartoons, the black-and-white kind starring grinning cows with pipe-cleaner limbs.

Good point.  It would seem that the hippies have been a bad joke for long enough that I've managed to forget that they were serious about it all.

Wow, The Music Never Stopped is my fucking favorite Dead song, hands down.

The Dead are different than most bands. They changed over time. During the late 70's some of their music almost sounded dance-like (disco dead? no way). They play everything from old timey, bluegrass, rockabilly, rock, psychadellic, to funk.

One of their best is Europe 72. I like everything on it. My 2nd favorite dead song is He's Gone.

I never fully appreciated the Grateful Dead until I saw them in concert. It was almost like a cult. My first close friend to see them came back FANATIC about them, saying, "OMG [insert real name here] YOU HAVE TO GO SEE THIS, they only play like 3 songs but it's the most awesome thing I've ever seen". (the truth was, they run their songs together fading in and out of the same song throughout 5-6 different songs, so it sounds like it's all one 45 minute long song).

This went on for years, while more and more friends went and came back indoctrinated in "the cult". I finally went and was sold. All of the sudden, songs that I thought were just "ok" made a lot more sense to me. Take the lyrics to the song G.O. referenced. All of the sudden, I knew EXACTLY what that song was talking about, while before, it didn't mean so much.

As far as musical skill, Mickey Hart might be the greatest percussionist on the planet. He won a grammy for his world CD Planet Drum, where he went to the far reaches of the planet, got tribesmen (from like deep in Africa, India, etc) and got them into a studio and made music with them. Planet Drum has gotten played more times than any other CD I own. It's just great background music. Phil Lesh is a decent bass player, but Jerry was an exceptional lead guitarist, especially considering he has 9 fingers. I won't say they are the best instrumentalists in the world (aside from Mickey), but Phil and Jerry are/were very good. A very skilled guitar playing friend of mine use to shit all over the band, till I turned him on to some late 90's live stuff. Now he is a huge fan.

Their skill is being a "jam" band. No two concerts were anywhere near the same. You go to see your favorite band and they play the same old tired shit at every venue. Not true with the Dead and the concert develops as the night goes on. They might know what they are going to open with and encore with, but they just would wing it every night and make it sound better than on CD. What made them so special was that music magic could happen at any time. During any show they could do any song of their own, or anyone elses' song and make it sound totally different and way better. I'll NEVER forget seeing them play Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds the first time. Blown away. One of my first shows Jerry played Hendrixs Star Spangled Banner (from Woodstock) as an encore and it was like magic. This was at Soldier Field and during the song, fireworks started way off in the distance (up the Lake Michigan shore) and got closer and closer as the song went on till they were being set off in the north parking lot right off the venue.

As far as a "show" would go, I wouldn't trade a Dead show for just about anything (sans Pink Floyd).

Again, it wasn't until I saw them live did I get what they were trying to do as artists.

Again, my favorite song says it all:

From Music Never stopped:

There's a band out on the highway
They're high-stepping into town
It's a rainbow full of sound
It's fireworks, calliopes and clowns
Everybody's dancing

Come on children, come on children
Come on clap your hands

Sun went down in honey
And the moon came up in wine
You know stars were spinning dizzy
Lord the band kept us so busy
We forgot about the time

They're a band beyond description
Like Jehovah's favourite choir
People joining hand in hand
While the music plays the band
Lord they're setting us on fire

Crazy rooster crowing midnight
Balls of lightning roll along
Old men sing about their dreams
Women laugh and children scream
And the band keeps playing on

Also, I don't consider myself a "Deadhead" in the sense that I never quit my job and traveled with the band. I did camp out with the heads quite a few times and they are certainly a different breed.

I notice being a Deadhead reminds me of my Vietnam vet father and his buddies. When they (the vets) are around other people that weren't there, they talk about the food, the environment, stuff that pissed them off, etc. When the vets get around other vets, their discussion gets a lot more, how should I say(?), "deep".

Same thing goes with Deadheads. When you talk to them they'll talk about getting busted in Spearfish South Dakota while doing laundry at some laundry mat. With other Deadheads they'll talk about "do you remember when Jerry started playing this and Phil was playing that and they battled back and fourth until Jerry gave in and they played..".

I dunno. Again, I was always seen as "the cop" because I had shoes. It was a magical day for me the first time some veggie burrito chef offered me a hit off a joint on Shakedown Street at the campgrounds. I ran up and down yelling "I'm no longer 'The Cop'!!!" much to the dismay and confusion of the Deadheads. My friend, (who was an "on tour" deadhead) later explained to everyone what was going on. After, one of his friends dragged me around to all the "vendors" saying, "hey, remember this guy? He's NOT a cop!!!!" to the sounds of "NO WAY, dude, are you sure??!!".

Sorry, it was a "coming of age" type of thing for me. I had to share.

I saw the Dead for the first time in 1970, at the Cleveland Music Hall.  Pigpen cooked himself breakfast (bacon, of course) on a hotplate on stage.  They tore the place up.  For a period of time during the show, I could not discern any contact with the ground whatsoever.  I vibrated in mid-air and could see blasts of color being emitted from the ears of the band members.  Dead head or not, as far as live bands go, when they were on there was no better band.

Music aside, when the Dead came to town, acid was easy to get.  In fact, now that bands like the Dead and Phish no longer tour, you don’t see it around as much.

Again, aside from Desolation Row, the highlight for me was the band stopping everything and making helicopter noises when the news helicopter was hovering a few hundred feet above the audience.

That's another thing. I thought to myself, "how smart is that? what if something went wrong with the helicopter?".

Leave it to the band to make any prop a part of the show.

Edit: I guess this is more Woggah's scene:

Party! Yeah, man! All right! Can you believe this?! Damn!

Dude! Party!

What's that? Huh? I can't understand you over the noise of the—huh? Oh—you're saying "party"?

Hell, yeah! I heard that!

"Around The World," man! Did you see the guy dressed like a Hawaiian? Shit just got crazy! Quarters upstairs, beer pong in Bobby's room, and a ton of prospies in for the weekend!

Yeah, son!

You! Take a Jell-O shot with me right now! Come on! Do it! Just do it! Pussy!

Raise da roof, y'all!

Hey! Where you going? The night is young! You better do a beer bong with me later! I'm watching you! Seriously!

Beerbeerbeerbeerbeerbeer! Fuck, yeah! Shit! Double-fisting! Party! Party!

Man, look at Sam on the couch all passed out! He needs to man up and handle his beer! Where's the Sharpies? Ha! What a douche!

Hey, look over there! Andy's chugging! Chug, Andy! Chug! Chug! Chug! Yeah!!

Unreal!

Whoa, check out that chick on the dance floor! Man, I gotta tap that shit! Bet you 20 bucks I can! Wait a minute…. I think some gay dude is trying to hit on her! What a bunch of bullshit!

I'm blacking out tonight, son!

I like how speakers sound!

Hell, yeah! A bunch of guys from the football team just showed up! That means this party is going on, what, what! Off the hook! Everyone said the school would break this up! They all said that and they were wrong! Who looks stupid now, huh? Yeah! Everyone needs to grow a pair!

Also, Mike was looking for you.

Man, school fucking sucks, but this party is fucking awesome! Am I right? You know I am! Who's in for some kings? Let's play with jungle juice! I don't know how I'm gonna wake up tomorrow!
