It's my first spring away from Tornado Alley in some years, and I admit I'm a bit thrilled myself.

I went back up there last week on business.  Tornado warning my first night.

I enjoy news reports where survivors tell the interviewing reporter that they intend to rebuild.

I mean, I should think residents of the Bible Belt would know better than anyone a "sign from God" when they see it.

More that 400 times that many people bit it in Burma last week, but THIS is what we're supposed to care about?

Why give a shit about the Burmese?  Their own government doesn’t.  Besides, they’ll shit out enough babies in the next month to make up for the population loss.

Yes, Fnord, we already know that if there's a single off-white person to go, you won't shed a tear. Perhaps there's a Burmese version of that cartoon Mexican woman splorting cucarachas all over the southern US...

What I want to know is why Laura Bush couldn't shut her pie hole until our food and medicine had reached the people on the ground.

Stupid bitch.

The old rule is that one mile from you means that you have to care about one less person. So a quake 2000 miles away that kills 2010 people means less than a car wreck in your home town that kills 11.

That's why nobody cares about the big Chinese quake. Too damn far away. If it weren't for the Olympics it would rate about 2 column inches.

China just can't catch a break this year, can they?

There's this quake--and the body count is just going to get worse; there was a story recently about some virus outbreak with a high mortality rate (their government seems to have sat down hard on that story, as it's disappeared); and of course there's a whole shitstorm around the Olympics that is bringing them the wrong kind of attention from the rest of the world:  Tibet.  Crackdowns on dissidents.  Censorship of web sites and restrictions to Internet access.  Last year, it was their killer pet foods and prescription drugs.

...Why the fuck did they even want to hold the Olympics?  I ask that question every four years of every city stupid enough to campaign for it and unlucky enough to win the "honor"--it always seems to entail more expense than profit for the city, and usually a lot of bad press--but it's ten times more puzzling why a repressive, control-crazy government would deliberately court visitors and scrutiny from the rest of the world.

They're deluded, is why. They honestly believe they're not doing anything wrong, and that their "private, national matters" are none of the outside world's business. The way they were describing the size of that quake, however, has been intriguing. It would be as if it went off in Chicago and could be felt from Phoenix to Maine.

And then throw a tantrum when the world begins doing just that. Those wacky commies!

You sent your pets to eat their babies, didn't you. Those poor Burmese brown people can't catch a break.

My family did it once.  We split a taxicab with two other families on the way out to Limon, Costa Rica.  I don't recommend it.

You'd think all the fat folks in that region would be less susceptible to being carried off by the wind.

Why did 6,100 Mexicans storm the Alamo?

They only had 5 Chevys.

I would rather wear a dog collar and be dragged on the bumper than have to stay in Limon, CR.

This was in the early 80's, but it was kinda nice.  No hot water or electricity, but the water was warm, the papayas were fresh, the beach was filled with tiny crabs, fireflies at night, and there was a spider on the outhouse so big that my dad had to go out and beat it with a broom, and it ran away.
