It was a gift he made it so far and still kept putting it up on stage for so long. He had serious health issues he kept beating back.

He could be quite motivated on stage, punchily playing bass with a pick.

The last interesting snippet from Phil's home studio. A jam from this summer with Stanley Jordan playing his two handed fretboard hammering technique on filed down frets. Lends a nice clear tone to Garcia's place in jazzier songs like Eyes of the World. In the last few minutes Jordan answers Phil's question on how he arrived at the technique.

Thanks for posting the Clubhouse video.  Stanley Jordan's comments about applying some piano technique/simulation to guitar is spot on.

The last time I saw Phil play was back in 1970, when I was working with Peter Liebes who did sound for Quicksilver. It was the last show that the big 3 did together; The Dead, The Airplane, Quicksilver along with the off shoots Hot Tuna (Papa John was there) (NRPS... great set). It was the night I pissed off Grace by asking about Signe. Oh well.

The Dead were excellent that night.

I decided not to join the crew for Quicksilver, which is another story all together. Peter and I remained friends until he passed away. Still friends with his first wife, Suzan.

I saw the Dead a number of times in the early 1970s and once in the early 90s.  First time was in the fall of 1970, and the NRPS opened.  Both bands were phenomenal.  I was quite convinced that I was levitating during the show.  I also saw Furthur once (with Phil).  The early years were far better, in my opinion, but Phil was always good.
