I fell down the network rabbit hole many moons ago, about the time I finally outgrew fireworks.
The first thing I learned is a network is a living, breathing organism that grows or dies based on its ability to encourage resource sharing. Because - ask Rcade you don't believe me - 'this thing of ours' will drive any one person alone stark, raving nuts.
Paradoxically, the cruel daily train wreck is a community mental health resource and good for the soul. Go figure, huh?
I banned a user last night for the first time in 20+ years, though lord knows I was tempted before. And it kept me awake all night. I didn't like it.
Today's web is in-your-face immediate, not the usenet of yore, where you could ignore what you didn't like with a Zookeeper twit filter. Tom, and the next son of Tom, will bring this system to its to its knees again. Or maybe gelding does cure evildoers. But that's only my opinion.
This is your system and your decision. Please speak up.

So who did you ban? I keep on banning russians. In fact, If we were to ban Russia as a whole, there would be a heck of a lot let Spammage.
IMO of course.

I think Horse has seen that if he misbehaves, we will drop his ass like a bad habit.
I think we need to have an opportunity to get our shit together before we let him back in. He uses up a lot of energy that we could be using to build up the content. I like Tom well enough, but I don't want his bloviation to turn off our users who don't appreciate his brand of fertilizer.
If he wants to contribute some actual content (he used to be very good at it), I would say unban him. If he wants to relive the old days and annoy our valued guests, fuck it.

Couldn't have put it better myself...

...but on those two points, we disagree.
And choad: I certainly understand your moral struggle, in principle; but seriously, have you ever seen anyone (excluding spammers) campaign so assiduously over so many years for a banning?

I deleted a spam post last night. However, I didn't ban a user.
We'll see.
I will just say this (assuming it isn't Horse you banned) - so far, his Royal YeeHeeDom has been less concerned about us banning him than we have been.
On the other hand, if you banned him already, then I stand corrected.
I don't know. Tom annoyed the shit out of me at first. Then he found my personal information. As far as I know, he never used it to fuck with me in any manner. I am not saying he never could or would - but being somewhat naive, I would figure it is likely he will not. He's earned a small smidge of respect from me.
But if he starts spewing for the usual YeeHee GoldenHorsey Bloated Alfalfa Laced crap fest...
Whatever you all want. I don't really give a h00t!

No, never, not anywhere. And I've known my share of needy drama queens.
Thank you, all. Anyone needs me, I'm off in search of twisted toons.

Banning can have the effect of protecting free speech. Spamming or trashing a message board with drivel is an infringement on everyone else's right to communicate.
I wouldn't sweat it your Purpleness.
As to horseonabitch, I certainly wouldn't want him banned simply because he's unpopular. Some of my favorite times on cruel were spent in skirmishes with him. One thing I will say is that he must be loving this attention.
Oh, and I promise not to get into any Fuck Off wars with the jujubee. Once cured me. Hi Jew if that's really you.
