They do.  I don't think you can empathize with someone without at least a little bit of love.  Ironic then that, while the Greeks have dozens of words for different kinds of love, the word we get empathy from, εμπάθεια, (empátheia) has an opposite meaning denoting strong negative feelings and prejudice against someone.
