“During my twelve-and-half years as a member of this body, I have never believed that additional gun control or federal registration of guns would reduce crime,” Biden said on the floor of the Senate in July 1985. “I am convinced that a criminal who wants a firearm can get one through illegal, untraceable, unregistered sources, with or without gun control.”

Great Article.

The war on guns will be as great a victory as the war on drugs.

Until we address what is the causative factors of societal violence, nothing will actually change. This is all theatre.

The 1985 comment is pretty stupid and inapt.  The recent mass shootings that have gotten so much attention all involved legal purchases.  While it is impossible to know what would have happened if the law had been different a month ago, it is clear that the law made the purchases all too easy.

If the shithead in Uvalde had to wait another three years to buy his mass-murder-machine, he might have had opportunity to change his mind, or not be so impulsive. Or, if that type of weapon were illegal to purchase, make the fucker go underground to find it - either he gets caught by cops trying to navigate the black market, or the market value shoots up so much he can't afford it.

"Do nothing" isn't working.

Semi Automatic rifles have been available to the public since 1907. Why is it now a problem? Throwing a band-aid of laws will only cause the spread of this. Address the root causes.  We can always look to the HUGE SUCCESS OF THE WAR ON SOME DRUGS fora predictor of how THE WAR ON GUNS will play out.

The so-called 'root causes' are largely going to be social; they've taken generations to take root and will take generations to resolve. In the meantime, I'd like to think that not giving the general public access to mass-murder machines would be a pretty good start.

Also, the War on Drugs was really started as the War on Black People, so it was pretty misguided from the get go.

Also, also, it would really just be The War on SOME Guns.

Yes, yes, and kids in NYC used to ride the subway to school with their rifles in a leather sling so they could go to shooting class.  Those were the days, eh?

And now, even the phrase "common-sense gun reform", has become a sad cliche.  My vote is that we all go back to single shot rifles and pistols like our founding fathers intended.  Everything else gets melted down to make a massive statue of a naked Donald J. Trump getting butt-fucked by some NRA goon.

Ain't gonna happen. We missed that bus years ago, and with 100 million gun owners in the US at the last estimate, we have to find balance.

Balance?  Surely you jest.

We need to do both -- institute some rational gun regulation and address "causative factors."  And we keep missing "the bus," so it just gets worse.

Do you oppose raising the age for purchasing semi-automatic weapons?

Do you oppose background checks for all gun purchases?

Do you oppose waiting periods?

Is there any additional gun regulation that you would accept?

It depends. These are all possible avenues.  Here in Oregon we have background checks, and waiting periods, depending how busy the agency is, if one is a new gun purchaser, etc.

And on the main, these suggestions are temporary bandages, and will do nothing to prevent criminals and wacko's.  As I said above, I always look to the shining example of the WOD's and it's successes.

Gun purchases have been crazy. for the last 3 years due to many factors. The main factor perhaps is that society is now (IMPOV) collapsing due to what I cited about the underlying causes, and the chickens are coming home to roost. National Elections won't fix it, Buffoons on both sides of the aisles.  What to do? Local action, politically, socially. People do have the right to defend themselves, even under the precepts of Ahimsa, self defense and community defense are acceptable.

The media's "If it bleeds it leads" is a huge factor in all of this; there are rules in place regarding reporting on suicides because of copycat actions, but none about gun deaths/mass shootings. These companies are making billions off of clicks, adverts. It is ghoulish.

Sam Harris is frequently just an opinionated jackwad.  So am I, but I don't try to make money off my opinions.

Even a broken clock can be correct twice a day.  I hardly pay attention to any of the opinion mongers.  I was surprised by this one though.

Continue to "whatabout" all you want.  If these kids had to lug around a Remington hunting rifle, instead of these little plastic guns, a lot less people would be dead.  Most of these little bit-asses don't even look like they could pick up 25 pounds.

If the underlying social issues was dealt with, we wouldn't be having this discussion. Quit fetishizing the tool. We have had semi automatics since 1907. Why now? Think FFS.

And, AR-15's have been available for the general public since 1962? 1964?  Do you see where this goes? Why now? What is going on to cause this mayhem?  We could go to the Mexican model of course, 1 gun store for the whole country, selling, 22 rifles... and then there is that little problem of 40,000 gun deaths a year by guns with 1/2 the US population.  Gun Control will fail, every time until we deal with the social issues, which neither party wants because it will disturb the Oligarchs. They are happy to see us fight amongst ourselves, ignoring what is really going on.
