Why is any appliance connected? Turning on your dishwasher from work? Why not turn it on before you leave the house manually? Just because you can make these devices doesn't mean you should.

OMFG.
Coffee makers have had timers on them for THIRTY YEARS. You want tea when you get home from work? Set the fucking timer. You only have to set the fucker once and remember to put tea and water in it!

I used to review Java technical books for Addison-Wesley. Jini and Open Service Gateways were all the talk back in 2001 - 2002. Building drivers in Java to control small electronics. In their naive vision, drivers would be available in an online community and anyone could take the source code and write and deploy an updated driver for all to use. And high jinks and hilarity would ensue, one assumes.
