Here's my own humble account of a Captain we celebrated last year.
John Kendrick Slept Here
The state will recognize "Captain John Kendrick Day" on October 1 and the local hysterical society is throwing a party.
John Kendrick moved to Wareham from Barnstable, MA in 1777 to outfit and take command of the Fanny, a US licensed privateer, or pirate boat boasting a crew of 100 and 18 guns. Its mission, loot British shipping.
Some of the resulting booty furnished Kendrick's Wareham home but he didn't stick around long to enjoy it, dropping from sight at war's end in 1783. Historians assume Kendrick resumed whaling and the coasting trade until October 1, 1787, when the Columbia Expedition sailed out of Boston Harbor, Kendrick commanding. He renamed the Pacific Northwest's largest river Columbia.
Kendrick's subsequent history is an unbroken record of quarrels, cheating, looting, slaughter and international ill-will until he was dispatched himself, grapeshot fragged by his own men in Honolulu (then called Fair Haven) on Dec 3, 1794. By most contemporary accounts, he had the personality of a decayed tooth.

Just finished this series BBC-The First World War. You'll probably need to register at the site to see the page, but if you like documentaries, it's well worth it.
Anyway, previously all I knew about WWI was it involved trench warfare and an arch dude. But seriously, I became interested in WWI from listening to Dan Carlin's Hardcore History podcast, which it seems may last longer than did the war, and this series is a nice complement to it.

In Bruges- an excellent film I can't seem to talk anyone into watching.
Millers Crossing- is now on my list. When I read about it, I thought maybe I'd already watched it. I was thinking about Mean Streets though. There are some plot similarities. You mook. Old but very good film if only for the fight scene, a young Harvey Keitel and Robert De Niro.
The Beast of War- I'll watch if I can find it. If Stephen Baldwin dies that would be good.

I got a weird early look at the world, old enough when I first encountered television to understand how fucked up it was. Or most of it. Animated Krazy Kat blew my doors off, as it should, with any human. So did bullwinkle moose.
I'd already consumed a double dose of Grimm German gothic, punch & judy and Peruvian radio soap operas, all of them far more reality based than any of the US's tepid dramas and hideous advertising.
