"Computers at the headquarters of the Barack Obama and John McCain campaigns were hacked during the campaign by a foreign entity looking for future policy information, a source with knowledge of the incidents confirms to CNN... Agents from the FBI and Secret Service came to the office and said, "You have a problem way bigger than what you understand... you have been compromised, and a serious amount of files have been loaded off your system."
My question, I suppose, is a technical one. How did the hackers KNOW which computers they had access to?

Well, since the election has now been over for some time now and the media is still talking more about Sarah Palin than they are Obama I think I'll jump on the bandwagon and blame her for it.... Not only that, but this is the only thread so far that she hasn't been mentioned in.....

My first guess would be that they either got in through a system with an externally facing IP address in a block designated to barackobama.com or sent email to the campaign and got someone to run something they shouldn't have.

I would ordinarily agree, since it's already been demonstrated that McCain never knew how to operate teh Intarwebz, but his campaign staffers certainly do, and someone left an unsecure connection lying about, apparently. Oddly enough, the FBI should be able to pinpoint exactly whose drive it was, and why they're not taking that person apart is beyond me.

I'ts not that easy when it comes to connections in other countries, especially countries that don't like to cooperate with US authorities. For example, let's say for example that they traced it back to an IP address in China. They can't prove that it actually came from China if the Chinese government doesn't want to help. It could be using a static NAT through a router in China and you would never see the real source IP.

OK, I admit: I did it. I'm embarrassed and very sorry. Can we move on now?
