I've noticed personally that in the UK, the expiration dates are a lot more "accurate". By this I mean that if you buy something on or just before the expiration, you probably will need to consume it ASAP.
Whereas here in USA-land, they have ridiculously offset dates, so that you likely have many days/weeks before actual spoilage.

Sixty five years of prepackaged rubbish have created a consumer culture incapable of feeding itself.
The 2.5 lbs of assorted dry beans and 1 lb of rice I consume every week, the bulk of my diet, set me back all of maybe $5. Fresh fruit and veg to make it palatable, add another $75.
Italians will probably profit from this windfall. We wouldn't know how.

We have homemade soup 3-4 times a week during winter. There is not one processed food in the house unless the kid brings it.

We eat canned and frozen veggies because in most cases it's too difficult/wasteful to buy fresh.
But we eat what fresh we can.
And neither of us can stomach much of the processed stuff--no frozen entrees, no sauce from a jar, etc.
Which is not to say we don't or won't pile into some junk food.

We have delivered Pizza on Friday's, it is yummy.
(aside from that all of us cook, preferably from our garden.)
